The trails that are proposed to you here are based on the guide “Trail map in & around Mareuil en Périgord” that you will find in the premises of the Périgord-Dronne-Belle Tourist Board in Brantôme en Périgord as well as at its local offices (as in Mareuil) and in certain shops. However, our trails draw your attention to local heritage sites that are visible without leaving the footpaths.
On the trails you will come across:
– Dry stone shelters dating back to the time when wine was produced in the region until the very beginning of the 20th century;
– Abandoned quarries that provided construction stone until the end of the 19th century;
– Cluzeaux – natural cavities summarily fitted out in remote times – that illustrate the precariousness of our ancestors’ life. Many had a defensive function;
– Mission crosses, most of which date from the 19th century;
– Ovens – for bread or lime – which bear witness to the ingenuity of past generations;
– Washing places, sometimes located in lush underwood where you might expect to spot… fairies!
– Sarcophagi carved into the rock from the Merovingian period (8th century);
– Dovecotes that date from the time when bird droppings were used as fertilizer and when the importance of the dovecote was proportional to that of the estate;
– Wells and cisterns, many of which are gems of local architecture;
– Remains from various periods that add a touch of originality to an extremely rich heritage.
